The Wellsboro Varsity boys basketball team dropped their regular season opener, falling to Sayre 58-48.

Sayre jumped out to a 17-10 first quarter and kept that seven point advantage to halftime, 28-21. The Hornets cut into the deficit some by the end of third quarter as Sayre led 38-32, but couldn't close the gap in the final frame. The combination on Nate Williams and Seth Murrelle were too much for the Hornet defense as they combined for 38 points. Williams finished with 21 points while Murrelle scored 17.

Senior Joey Doganiero led the Hornets with 14 points, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 8 rebounds. Junior Michael Pietropola added 10 points, Sophomore Dawson Prough, Senior Dylan Prough and Junior Kieron Smethers had eight points a piece. Smethers added seven boards while Dylan Prough grabbed five.

In the J.V. game, the Hornets lost 35-25 to fall to 1-1 on the season. Freshman Brandon Lamphier had a team-high 13 points in the game.

With the loss, the Varsity team falls to 1-1. The team will be back in action on Thursday, December 12 as they host North Penn.
