Hornets top Liberty, 58-45

The Wellsboro boys basketball team kicked off the second half of the NTL West schedule with a 58-45 win Friday night over Liberty.

The team got off to a slow start allowing Liberty to jump out to an early 5-0 lead, but the Hornets would quickly recover to tie the game up with just under 5 minutes remaining in the first quarter and never looked back the rest of the way to record their 16th victory of the season.

Sophomore Michael Pietropola led the team with 21 points, including five three-point shots. Junior Dylan Prough was the only other Hornet is double-figures on the night with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 5 steals. Rouding out the rest of the scoring was Senior Jordan Jackson with 9, Junior Joey Doganiero with 7, Sophomore Kieron Smethers with 4, and Freshman Dawson Prough had three points.

Senior Matt Reese had eight rebounds, five steals, and five assists and Jackson pitched in five assists on the night.

In the JV game, the Hornets defeated Liberty 43-27 to improve their record to 11-4. Dawson Prough was the leading scorer in the game with 20 points.

With the win, the Varsity team improves to 16-1 (6-0 NTL West). The team will be back in action on Wednesday, January 30 as they host rival Mansfield.
