Sophomore Dawson Prough sunk a three-pointer as time expired to lift the Wellsboro Varsity boys basketball team over South Williamsport, 47-44 on Monday.

The Hornets trailed a South 11-7 after the first quarter and 18-14 at the half, but after good adjustments from head coach Todd Outman and the staff, the Hornets took control. Wellsboro scored 22 points in the third quarter to take a slim 36-33 lead going into the final frame.

The Hornets scored 8 points and held a 44-44 tie with just 10 seconds left in the game. The Hornets took control of a loose ball and called a timeout to set up the final play. After the inbounds play, Junior Kieron Smethers found the younger Prough for the game-winning shot.

Senior Joey Doganiero led the team with 14 points, five boards, and four assists while Junior Michael Pietropola added 13 points. Dawson Prough scored 11, Smethers chipped in with seven points, 10 boards, and three assists, and Senior Dylan Prough rounded out the scoring with two points.

In the J.V. game, the Hornets lost to South, 39-28.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 4-1 on the year. The team will be back in action on Friday, December 27 as they host Jersey Shore in the first round of the Wellsboro Hornets Sports Booster Club Holiday Tournament.
