Hornet baseball falls to Canton, beats Sayre

Following a loss to Canton on Tuesday, April 1 the Wellsboro Varsity baseball team rebounded to defeat Sayre, 18-8 on Wednesday, April 2.

Wellsboro jumped up 6-0 in the top of the first but Sayre came back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs of their own.

The Hornets added two more in the second to make it 8-4 but the Redskins were able to get one back in the bottom half to cut it to 8-5. Wellsboro scored one more in the third to make it 9-5 but Sayre cut it to 9-8 with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The Hornets made it 10-8 with a run in the fourth.

After a scoreless fifth Wellsboro scored eight in the sixth to get the win.

Senior Dylan Prough led the way for Wellsboro, going 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. Senior Brian Doty added two hits, including a double, with three runs scored.

Sophomore Joe Allen added a double while Senior Brandon Owlett, Sophomore Dawson Prough and Junior Brett Kendrick also had hits. Doty scored three times while Dawson Prough, Sophomore Nick Tremper and Allen scored twice. Owlett, Sophomore Sam Moss, Senior Cody DeHaas and Sophomore Larry Walters also scored.

On the mound, Sophomore James Mundy started and earned the win, going two innings to strike out four. Allen went the final four, striking out eight in relief.

Canton 4, Wellsboro 3

The Hornets started the 2014 season off with a loss as they fell to Canton. The Hornets took their first lead in the top of the fifth with two runs, going up 3-2 but it was short lived as Canton added two more in the bottom half of the inning to lead 4-3.

Dawson Prough had two hits, including a double, an RBI and run scored while Owlett scored the other two runs.

On the mound Dylan Prough and went three innings followed by Allen for two innings and Owlett for one. The three pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts.

After two games the Hornets are 1-1. The team will be back in action on Friday, April 4 as they host Canton.
