The Wellsboro Varsity boys soccer team started the season off on a high note as they shut out Athens, 3-0, on Wednesday, September 3 in Wellsboro.

The Hornet scoring started at 32:50 as Junior Dawson Prough found Senior Brieux Thibaut to take a 1-0 lead. Then in the second half, Prough assisted Sophomore Jacob Singer at 61:40 of the game to make it 2-0 Wellsboro. The final goal came at 78:06 as Senior Gillan Alafoginis scored on a direct kick.

The Hornets out shot Athens 16-9, and Senior Goalie Jake Mitchell earned his first shut out of the year by recording 8 saves.

"It was the first game after a long pre season and it took us a half to shake the rust out. I was very happy that we kept a clean sheet, that is something the boys pride themselves on," said head coach John Shaffer. "We still have a lot to work on, this is a good launching point for the rest of the year but we have to build off of it for Saturday."

In the JV game, the Hornets won 2-1 behind goals from Freshmen Tanner Runyan and Noah Fitch.

With the win, the Hornets begin the season 1-0 (1-0 NTL). The team will be back in action on Saturday, September 6 as they host Galeton.
