Hornets top Athens, improve to 5-0

The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team picked up their fifth consecutive victory as they beat Athens 55-48 on Thursday, December 18.

Athens held a 16-14 after the first quarter before the Hornets outscored the Wildcats 12-10, led by Seniors Michael Pietropola and Kieron Smethers, in the second to tie the hosts up 26-26 at the half. After the third quarter the Hornets held a 40-39 lead before outscoring Athens 15-9 in the final frame to claim their first NTL Division 1 victory of the season.

Pietropola finished the game with 23 points and nine rebounds, his fifth straight game with 20 plus points. Smethers added 19 points, his highest total of the year, and 12 rebonds for his third double-double of 2014. Junior Dawson Prough finished with six points, Sophomore Brandon Lamphier had four points, and Senior Jake Mitchell pitched in three.

Lamphier also added nine rebounds, three steals, and three assists, Smethers had two assists, one steal, and one block, and Mitchell had five rebounds and three steals.

In the JV game the Hornets dropped their first game of the year by the final of 45-35.

With the win, the Varsity team improves to 5-0 (1-0 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Saturday, December 20 as they travel to Sayre.
