The Athens Boys Soccer team handed Wellsboro their first loss of the season, as they won 1-0 on Thursday, October 8.

The game's lone goal came with 28:57 as Ryan Segar scored unassisted and Athens held on the rest of the way for the win.

"A great game between two very good teams. I'm proud of how the boys played," said head coach John Shaffer. "I'm sure we will watch film and see a lot to work on. We were put under the most presure so far and that definitely affected our passing game. The defense played great limiting a great Athens team. Hopefully we can grow from this and be better going forwards."

Athens edged Wellsboro 4-1 in corner kicks and outshot the Hornets 11-8. Junior Casey Hoover made 8 saves in goal.

The JV game ended in a 1-1 tie. Sophomore Devin Webster had the team's goal.

The loss drops Wellsboro to 12-1-1 (8-1-1 NTL). The team will be back in action on Saturday, October 10 as they travel to Liberty.
