Hornet wrestlers fall to Athens, 66-12

The Wellsboro Varsity Wrestling team dropped their 10th consecutive match as they lost to Athens 66-12 on Tuesday, January 20.

The match started at 220 lbs. as Sophomore Kaleb Smith lost to Roger Horton by pin in 56 seconds. Junior Owen Covert scored a forfeit for Wellsboro at 285 lbs. to tie it up at 6-6 before Athens took the next seven matches, five of which came by forfeit. Freshman Cory Busch was pinned in 13 seconds by Kaidon Winters at 126 lbs. and Junior Vincent DeRita was pinned in 43 seconds by Zach Sheppeck at 145 lbs.

Senior Jack Chambers scored the other Hornet win as he pinned Shane Morgan in 5:39 at 152 lbs. before Athens took the rest of the weight class wins by forfeit.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 1-17 (0-7 NTL). The team will be back in action on Thursday, January 22 as they host Troy.
