Junior Sarah Ingerick scored a career-high 28 points to help the Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team knock off Liberty on Tuesday, January 20.

Ingerick also grabbed 16 rebounds for her first double-double of the season as the Lady Hornets won 65-34 in their second game of this week. Ingerick scored 10 points in the opening quarter giving Wellsboro a 15-7 lead. Wellsboro would take a 32-21 at halftime before the younger Lady Hornets started rotating through.

Wellsboro finished the second half strong as they outscored Liberty 33-13 for the win.

Wellsboro Head Coach John Davis was pleased with the team's performance following their tough loss to Wyalusing Monday night.

"I was very nervous from a potential hang over from Wyalusing on Monday, and we were a little fatigued tonight. Wyalusing played hard and they are a very good team and the girls excuted very well tonight."

In addition to Ingerick's 16 rebounds, Freshman Rachael Tuttle grabbed a team-high 18, a night after she grabbed 16 against Wyalusing. Eight out of her 18 were offensive rebounds, which gave Wellsboro numerous second and third chance opportunites to score points. Wellsboro grabbed 62 rebounds as a team, a number that Coach Davis was very impressed with.

"The girls really controlled the glass tonight and I was very pleased with that," Coach Davis remarked. "Our box outs were good, our passes have been better than the last couple of games, we had fewer turnovers tonight, but again rebounding was key tonight compared to other games this season where we struggled."

Freshman Lizzie Poirier was the second leading scorer with 12 points on the night, Senior Jordan Butters and Tuttle each had seven points, Sophomore Janessa Davis had four points, Sophomore Autum Kitajima had three points, and Sophomore Jessica Grab and Junior Alexa Singer each scored two points.

In the JV game, the Hornets cruised to a 51-13 win, their seventh straight, to improve to 10-2 on the year. Freshman Alyssa Yungwirth led the team with 16 points and Poirier had 12.

With the win, the Varsity team improves to 8-7 (2-3 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action Thursday, January 22 as they travel to Athens and will travel to Mifflinburg on Saturday, January 24.

"Our schedule doesn't get any easier. Athens is an honorable mention in AAA and Mifflinburg were district champs last year and have only lost one game this year and are really tough. We have to really prepare the next couple days in practice, play tough and we'll see what happens," Davis concluded.
