The Wellsboro Middle School Girls Basketball team beat previously unbeaten Athens 25-24 on Tuesday, February 17.

Wellsboro got down 3-0 to start the game, but then settled down and led 4-3 at the end of the 1st quarter and led 12-8 at halftime.  The young Lady Hornets played extremely well in the third quarter and pushed the lead to 23-14 at the end.

Wellsboro got outscored 10-2 in the fourth quarter as Athens made some big shots, but the team handled their pressure late and held on for the win.

"This was an intense and exciting game from start to finish," said head coach Darrell Morris. "Athens has such a good program, their girls are skilled, and they play tough pressure defense the whole game. For our team to go over to their gym and give them their first loss of the season really says a lot about our team.

"We made it a little closer at the end than we had to, but some of that was Athens making plays," continued Morris. "Our girls did enough to hold on at the end, and the experience of closing out a close game is so valuable for a young team. Even though all of our girls didn't have big stats for the game, they all played really well defensively and that was the difference in the game."

Julia Smith had a team and game high 13 points to go along with 7 rebounds and went 3-for-3 from the free throw line.  Emma Poirier had 6 points, 3 steals, and 2 assists. Cathryn Brought had 4 points and 3 steals and Lauren Singer had 2 points and 3 rebounds.  Karinthia Wimer added 2 rebounds, with Dani Hunt adding an assist and a rebound, while Jaime Palmer added a steal, an assist, and a rebound, and Heidi Zuchowski added a rebound.

In the B team game, the Hornets lost 42-12. The team is now 5-2 on the year, and will be back in action on Friday, February 20 as they travel to Troy.
