The Wellsboro Middle School Girls Basketball team came home in third place out of 16 teams at the Towanda tournament on Saturday, March 7.

The Lady Hornets beat Warrior Run 24-10 in their first game of the day and then put on a clinic against Hughesville with a 40-20 victory.

"Our girls played well at the Towanda Tournament," said head coach Darrell Morris. "The first 2 games were close at the half and our girls closed those games out very well. We had a one point lead against Hughesville at the half, but ended the game on a 23-4 run. They beat us by five in February, so to beat them by 20 a month later is a nice statement for our girls."

The third game didn't got so well for Wellsboro as they lost 35-22 to Waverly, sending them to the consolation game. The team captured third place with a 28-20 victory over Odessa-Montour to end the day.

"We didn't take care of the ball against Waverly and got outscored 14-2 in the 2nd quarter," continued Morris. "We couldn't recover from that deficit and got out-rebounded the whole game. Then we jumped on Odessa-Montour right out of the gate and had a 15-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. We played just well enough the rest of the game to hold on for the win and 3rd place."

Julia Smith scored 52 points and 24 rebounds during the course of the day to lead the team. Emma Poirier scored 30 total points, Cathryn Brought had 10, and Heidi Zuchowski finished with eight. Dani Hunt scored six points, Jaime Palmer pitched in with five to round out the scoring. Lauren Singer and Karinthia Witmer grabbed six rebounds each on the day.

The Lady Hornets' record now stands at 11-4. The team will be back in action tonight as they host Wyalusing.
