The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team dropped a 15-14 heartbreaker to Athens on Tuesday, April 19.

After trailing 12-5 after 5 innings, Wellsboro rallied with 5 runs in the sixth and 4 in the seventh to take a 14-12 lead heading into the bottom half of the inning. The lead wouldn't last long as Athens tied it, then with two outs, bases loaded, and two strikes on the batter, senior James Mundy's pitch hit the batter, walking home the winning run for Athens.

"It was a tough loss, especially how it ended," said head coach Philip Prough. "We showed a lot of fight tonight and I'm hopeful that will help us down the road.

"Of the 15 runs we gave up, 9 came with 2 outs," Prough continued. "We need to finish better. If we do, we'll be a much tougher team to beat. After a slow start our hitting is coming along. We made some minor changes in our lineup and I think the kids are feeling more comfortable with their roles."

Senior Dawson Prough went 4-for-4 with a double to lead the Hornets at the plate. Sophomore Dalton Prough was 3-for-4, senior Nick Tremper and sophomores Johnny Rowland and Caleb Tennis had 2 hits each, and senior Joe Allen had a hit. Allen started on the mound and allowed 11 runs in 4 innings of work. Mundy pitched the final 3 in relief and is credited with the loss.

The loss drops the Hornets' record to 3-4. The team will back in action on Saturday, April 23 on the road against Milton.

The Middle School team shut out Cowanesque Valley 7-0 to improve to 3-1. Billy Lechler went 3-for-3 and scored 3 runs to lead the team and Carson Davis was 3-for-4.
