Hornet wrestlers snap losing streak, beat Sayre 36-27

The Wellsboro Varsity Wrestling team picked up their first win of the year with a 36-27 defeat of Sayre on Friday, January 22.

The Hornets snapped a 28 match losing streak dating back to January 4th of last year when they went 1-4 at the Coudersport Duals. The match was also Wellsboro's Senior Night as Owen Covert and Tyler Evans were honored before the match.

The match started at 106 where Sayre won by forfeit, followed by three double forfeits. The first match of the evening saw Evans pin Sayre's Tyler Harbst in 57 seconds at 132 lbs., followed by a forfeit win for freshman Kris Stringham at 138 lbs. Sayre's Gavin Lundy-McCutcheon scored a 13-4 major decision on junior Caleb Sinkler at 145 lbs.

Sophomore Cory Busch was pinned in 1:10 by Sayre's Matthew Ingrassia at 152 lbs. then the Redskins won forfeits at 160 lbs. and 170 lbs. to take a 27-12 lead. Freshman Hunter Brown won by forfeit at 182 lbs. to bring the score to 27-18, and freshman Robert Brown and sophomore Nick Ingerick each picked up forfeits at 195 lbs. and 220 lbs. to give the Hornets a 30-27 lead.

The final match of the night was between Covert and Sayre's Dominic Red at 285 lbs. to decide the outcome. Covert scored a quick two points, then worked his way to a pin in 1:05 to give the Hornets the win.

In the Middle School match, the Hornets won 48-12 as they earned all forfeits to improve to 3-5 on the year.

The win improves the Hornets' record to 1-13 (1-7 NTL). The team will be back on the mat for their final match of the year on Saturday, January 30 at home against Williamson at 10:00 a.m.
