The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team trailed the entire game against Montoursville, but rallied in the fourth quarter for a 40-28 win on Saturday, February 6.

The Hornets came out sluggish to start the game after an overtime game with rival North Penn-Mansfield two days before and trailed 10-7 as Montoursville's Brycen Mussina scored six quick points to give the Warriors a 10-7 lead after the opening quarter. Wellsboro continued to struggle in the second quarter, but held Montoursville to only seven points to trail 17-11 at the half.

Wellsboro's defense turned up the pressure in the third and made up ground as they won the third quarter 12-8 to trail 26-23 heading into the fourth. The Hornets then came alive as they went on a 17-2 run in the fourth, and finally took their first lead of the game on a layup by junior Brandon Lamphier. The Hornets shut out and forced numerous Warrior turnovers for the rest of the quarter, and came home with a win in their final regular season game, locking up the No. 2 seed in District IV playoffs.

Senior Dawson Prough led the Hornets for the second straight game with 10 points, junior Alden Weiner scored seven points and grabbed six rebounds, and sophomores Dalton Prough and Quinn Henry each scored six points. Junior Jacob Singer scored four, sophomore Nic Ingerick had three, and Lamphier and sophomore Collin Pietropola finished with two.

In the JV game, the Hornets suffered their first loss of the year, losing 47-38 to finish the season 21-1. Freshman Brandyn Tuttle had a team-high 11 points.

The win improves the Varsity team's record to 15-7. The team will be off until playoffs start.
