Hornets sting Galeton, 3-1

The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team avenged an early season loss to Galeton with a 3-1 win on Wednesday, October 12.

"Tonight was a battle between two good teams. I'm proud of how the boys fought," said head coach John Shaffer following his 87th career win.

The Hornets scored early in the first half as junior Tanner Runyan scored on a penalty kick with 32:36 for a 1-0 lead. Senior Josiah Hill increased the Hornets' lead to 2-0 with 10:36 remaining in the half for his 90th career goal.

Wellsboro added one more goal on their second penalty kick in the second half. Senior Jacob Singer converted the attempt to make it 3-0 Wellsboro with 9:08 left in the game. Galeton erased the shutout with 1:41 left as Julian Martinez score to bring the final score to 3-1, Hornets.

Senior Casey Hoover made 12 saves in goal on the night for his 174th save of his career.

"We didn't play our best game offensively but we defended great," Shaffer continued. "The boys found a way to force two pk's and then Josiah scored a brilliant individual goal. Big shout out to Casey and the back line for shutting down Galeton."

The Tigers outshot Wellsboro 18-13 on the night and had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. Galeton committed 17 fouls, with Wellsboro being called on 16 fouls, and junior Ryan Stough received a yellow card at 14:38.

Wellsboro sept the night as the JV team won 5-0 to improve to 11-2-2 on the year. Sophomores Michael Hedge and Holden Kennedy, freshmen Conrad Becker and Nathan Heath, and senior Alex Freeman all scored.

The win improves the Hornets' record to 12-4 (9-3 NTL). The team will be back in action on Monday, October 17 at Williamson.
