The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team held on for a 51-46 win despite a 20-point fourth quarter by Sayre on Wednesday, January 20.

The Lady Hornets held a slim 14-11 lead after the first quarter and outscored the Lady Redskins 10-8 in the second to take a 24-19 lead at halftime. Wellsboro then scored 15 points in the third quarter led by sophomore Lizzie Poirier's eight points to go up 39-26 heading into the final frame.

Sayre got hot during the fourth quarter with two big three-pointers from Camry Lane and eight points from Paige Wampole, but the Lady Hornets survived the 20-point quarter from Sayre and held on for the win.

Senior Sarah Ingerick scored a game-high 24 points, while going 8-for-9 from the foul line in the fourth quarter. Ingerick now sits at 968 career points, just 32 shy of becomming the ninth Lady Hornet to reach 1,000 career points. The last member of the Lady Hornets to surpass 1,000 career points was Alex Marple in the 2010-11 season.

Poirier scored 16 points, and sophomore Rachael Tuttle finished with three on the night. Seniors Alexa Singer and Jada Jackson and juniors Autum Kitajima and Jessica Grab also contributed two points each in the win.

In the JV game, Wellsboro won 24-16 to improve to 13-3 on the year. Freshmen Dani Hunt and Emma Poirier each scored 10 points to lead the team.

The Varsity team improves to 12-4 and will be back in action on the road on Friday, January 22 against Troy.
