Lady Hornets top Wyalusing, win second straight

The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team won their second straight game by defeating Wyalusing 51-30 on Friday, December 23.

The first quarter was neck and neck as the Lady Hornets led 11-10. Wellsboro then broke the game open in the second as they went on an 18-6 run to take a 29-16 lead at the half. Wellsboro then outscored Wyalusing 22-14 (11-3 in the fourth quarter) to pick up their first NTL Large School Division win of the year.

Junior Lizzie Poirier was the game's leading scorer with 12 points for her sixth straight game with double-digit scoring. Seniors Janessa Davis and Jessica Grab were also in double figures on the night with 10 points each. Junior Rachael Tuttle finished with 7 points, sophomore Emma Poirier had 6, senior Autum Kitajima scored 4, and freshman Cathryn Brought rounded out the scoring with 2 points.

Tuttle collected 10 rebounds (95 on the year) and had 5 steals. Lizzie Poirier had 6 rebounds and 3 steals, Davis had 4 steals and 2 assists, Emma Poirier had 3 assists and 4 rebounds, and Kitajima had 4 assists.

Wellsboro (3-3) also won the JV game 35-19. Freshman Liza Manning led the Lady Hornets with 12 points and sophomore Dani Hunt and Jaime Palmer each finished with 7.

The win improves Wellsboro's record to 4-3 (3-0 NTL). The team will be back in action at Canton on Thursday, December 29.
