Hornets cruise past North Penn-Liberty

The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team won their 130th game under head coach Todd Outman with a 67-40 win over North Penn-Liberty on Saturday, January 14.

The Hornets struggled in the first quarter and North Penn-Liberty capitalized on that, edging them 14-13. Junior Dalton Prough prevented things from getting out of hand for the Hornets as he scored 9 of the team's 13 points in the quarter. When the Hornets woke up in the second quarter, they put the game out of reach for the Mounties.

Wellsboro's defense caused numerous Mountie turnovers in the second quarter, en route to outscoring them 23-9. Prough added 9 more points in the quarter to give him 18 at halftime, senior Jacob Singer added 5 of his 7 points, sophomore Andrew Brelo scored 5 off the bench, and junior Collin Pietropola added 4 to give the Hornets a 36-23 lead going into the locker room.

The Hornets kept the pressure on to start the second, again causing multiple North Penn-Liberty turnovers. The third quarter belonged to Singer, as he scored his final 11 points (3 three-pointers). Junior Quinn Henry added 4 points and Prough, junior Nic Ingerick, Pietropola, and sophomore Brandyn Tuttle all scored 2 points apiece. After three quarters the Hornets held a 59-30 lead.

Wellsboro's JV team played the majority of the fourth quarter, scoring 8 points to close out the game and securing the Hornets' 10th win of the season.

Prough finished with a game-high 20 points to go along with 4 assists, 4 steals, and 3 blocked shots. Singer finished the game with 18 (4-of-8 from behind the three-point line) with 2 blocked shots, and Brelo finished with 9 points off the bench. Pietropola and Tuttle scored 6 points each, Henry finished with 4, and Ingerick and senior Alden Weiner rounded out the scoring with 2 points each.

Prough finished with 6 rebounds, Tuttle grabbed 4, Henry had 2 assists, Ingerick had 4 assists and 4 steals, and sophomore Holden Kennedy recorded 3 assists.

Wellsboro's JV team started the afternoon off with a 51-18 win to improve to 10-1 on the year for their fourth straight win. Tuttle led the Hornets with 16 points and went 8-for-9 at the foul line. Kennedy added 8 points, freshman Daniel Mitchell scored 6, and freshman Tyren Wetzel had 3.

The Hornets are now 10-3 (7-1 NTL) on the year and will be back in action on Monday, January 16 as they host Athens.
