Middle School Hornets top Williamson

The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams started the 2016-17 regular season with wins over Williamson on Monday, January 30.

The young Lady Hornets won 18-7 for their first win of the year after starting out 0-4 at the Towanda tournament on January 14. Wellsboro led 2-0 after the first, 4-2 at the half, and 12-2 after three quarters of play.

"Our girls played hard tonight, rebounded well, and really controlled the game despite the low score," said head coach Darrell Morris. after his 82nd career win. "We passed the ball well and got a lot of good shots. We improved a lot in the last two weeks and we want to continue to push ourselves each week of the season."

Jena Boyce led the Lady Hornets with 8 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals, and 3 assists; Bailey Monks had 4 points and 6 rebounds; Sarah Mosher recorded 6 steals; and Chelsie English (5 rebounds) and Lindsey Marmara had 2 points each. Kiyah Boyce added 5 rebounds and 2 steals.

Wellsboro also won the B game 16-8. Emma Coolidge had 8 and Emma Pietropola had 4.

The Wellsboro boys defeated Williamson 40-12 for their first win of the season.

"I thought we started off timid as expected being or first game," said head coach Jason Greenfield. "I think we need to finish better under the hoop. But in all it was a good team win."

Both teams struggled to score early as the Hornets led 6-2, but Wellsboro kept improving as the course of the game went on. The Hornets held Williamson scoreless in the second quarter to lead 13-2 at the half, then went on a 27-10 run in the second half, with 19 of those points coming in the fourth quarter.

Joseph Grab led all scorers with a game-high 27 points, Will Poirier had 5, and Nevin DeCosta scored 4. Isaac Keane and Zach Singer also added 2 points each.

Wellsboro won the B game 16-9 behind 8 points from Liam Manning. Owen Richardson scored 4 and Drew Manning and Danny Timmons scored 2 points each.

Both teams will be back in action on Monday, February 6 at Towanda. The boys will play at the Northeast Bradford tournament on Saturday, February 4.
