The Wellsboro JV Football team kicked off Homecoming Week with a 36-14 win over Athens on Monday, October 1 to remain undefeated on the season.

"Overall we played well on both sides of the ball. Our defense came up big, especially in the second half," coach Ben Miller said after the game. "It always helps out when the defense scores. Offensively, we were able to move the ball well on the ground with a lot of different guys getting touches."

Both teams traded first half touchdowns for a 14-14 tie at the intermission. Junior Logan Henry started the scoring off with a 46-yard run in the first quarter to give Wellsboro a 6-0 lead. The Wildcats then answered back midway through the second quarter on a long run and two-point conversion to take an 8-6 lead. The Hornets then responded with 1:52 showing on the clock as Henry again busted a long run on 3rd-and-30 and ran in the two-point conversion to make it 14-8.

Athens scored the half's final touchdown on a 78-yard swing pass with 1:28 remaining. The Wildcats' two-point conversion was thwarted by the Hornets as freshman Ryan Sweet intercepted the pass attempt.

The second half, and mainly the third quarter belonged entireley to Wellsboro as their defense pitched a shutout to give the offense excellent field position. With 9:17 remaining in the third Henry broke off a 44-yard run to make it 20-14. Not even two minutes later Sweet intercepted his second Wildcat pass, but returned this one for a 50-yard score, to give Wellsboro a 28-14 lead after Henry ran in the two-point conversion.

Sophomore Alex Moore later scored from 10 yards out with 3:23 remaining. Henry ran in the conversion attempt to make it 36-14.

The win improves the Hornets to 4-0 on the season. The team is on the road next Monday, October 8 at Milton.
