Troy VFW
10:00am General Meeting
10:00am General Meeting:
Schools Absent:
Mansfield
Mary Abreu (Troy)
led the meeting.
The November minutes
were reviewed and approved. There was time allotted at the beginning of the
meeting for scheduling purposes.
Old Business:
Jim Stivason (Athens)
distributed draft copies of the NTL East Boys and NTL East Girls Basketball
schedules for 2011-12. He stated he used a scheduling program that randomly
selected the schools for scheduling instead of seeing the same sequence of
games each year. Pete Hall (North Penn) questioned the group about possibly
buying a program that will work the same way for scheduling in all sports.
Devin Smith (Elkland) stated he would look into it.
Andy Boyer (CV)
distributed draft copies of the 2011-12 Golf schedule. He stated the schedule
was moved down 1 week and that the East/West match was not listed. Mr. Boyer
also stated he would have draft schedules for NTL West Girls and Boys
Basketball at the next meeting.
Roger Heckrote
(Liberty) will have draft schedules for 2011-12 Wrestling at the next meeting.
Athletic Directors should email Mr. Heckrote with “closed dates” ASAP.
Ms. Abreu pleaded
with NTL Athletic Directors to have final sports schedules both in hard copy
AND electronic versions. It makes the communication process much easier when
also done electronically.
It was stated that
District IV Basketball is going back to .500 records or better to qualify for
district playoffs.
Review Comments from
NTL Principals:
Ms. Abreu, who is a Principal, stated there were many comments that came from NTL Principals concerning athletics. Here are some things she shared with the group:
1. Many Principals are unaware that officials are paid as a chapter for officiating scrimmages.
2. The NTL Principals want to form a committee to look at championship issues for each sport.
3. The Principals and AD’s would rather have Co-Champs instead of playing off for championships.
4. Schools cannot “Opt Out” of the assigning process.
5. The “NTL Player of the Year” should not be in the NTL Constitution but rather should be conducted by the NTL Athletic Directors.
Other Business:
Ms. Abreu also stated that it seems athletic directors do “what they feel is best for them respectively” as far as sending out contracts to officials. She stated that both sending contracts or not sending contracts to officials is currently acceptable.
Pete Hall had questions concerning basketball numbers and the NTL Constitution with regards to players playing JV and Varsity competition. It currently reads: “Junior Varsity players may be 9th, 10th, or 11th graders. Seniors may play JV only if both schools mutually agree. Teams violating the rule will be penalized as follows: They will forfeit all games (both varsity and junior varsity) in which the ineligible players participate. They will be placed on probation by the league and further violations could result in suspension from the league. “ It was then stated that communication between AD’s and coaches is the key when playing upperclassmen in JV competition. It is necessary to play Jr. and Sr. athletes by some schools simply to field JV teams.
Sherri Prough (Wellsboro) stated her school only has 5 Jr. High wrestlers.
It was then stated that teams can “press” in Jr. High Basketball in the last 2 minutes of the “B” game and the entire “A” game.
The next NTL Athletic Director meeting will be held on January 12, 2011 at the Troy Vet’s Club.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:20 for lunch.
Respectfully submitted,
Bob Rockwell, Canton
